Imagine the jobs that our famous celebrities did before they got their huge breaks and made a mark in the entertainment industry. Did they actually become instant celebrities? Are they living the life that they are experiencing now?
You should know that before they were discovered because of their talent and become the celebrities we now know, folks like Madonna, Brad Pitt and Mariah Carey had to do regular jobs, away from the glitz and glamour and the huge paychecks. These popular artists know for a fact that stardom needs not only exposure but the right kind of exposure or marketing. A great (not boring) personality is also a requirement to becoming famous.
It’s tough becoming rich and popular. The road to fame is going to be a rollercoaster ride and seems unending until you have caught a huge break or opportunity to show the world what you can offer for the entertainment business. It’s interesting and quite inspiring to learn that a lot of our famous stars began their quest for stardom with mediocre jobs.
Let’s take a look at Madonna’s road to fame. This famous popstar from the 80s dropped out college. From Michigan, she tried her luck in New York. She majored in dance when she was in college but she got bored and decided to pursue her dreams in NYC.
She struggled to make ends meet dancing so she went to work at Dunkin Donuts. She helped glaze donuts and took customer orders until her break. Madonna, Dunkin Donuts worker Madonna, has left her mark forever on the music world as one of the bestselling artists of all time! Before she became what you see today, she moved to New York with a measly $35!
Sometimes you need more than one job to make ends meet before you are famous, just ask Mariah Carey. She waited tables, checked hats and coats at a local entertainment spot and during the day, she swept up hair at the beauty salon! Whatever it takes right? All that changed when she signed a record deal with Columbia in 1990.
She also performed in small gigs by singing at a number of night clubs with the hopes of making it big one day. That fateful day finally came when she performed as a backup singer for Ms. Brenda K. Starr and had the opportunity to hand over her demo tape to the person who discovered her.
It’s interesting to know that actress Helen Mirren experienced working in an amusement park, which is located by the seaside, before earning awards from various award-giving bodies including BAFTA, Emmy, Oscar and the Golden Globe.
You may have known Orlando Bloom from the hit trilogy, Lord of the Rings, but did you know that this handsome lad used to work as a clay trapper? If you don’t know what a clay trapper is, it’s someone who works at a shooting range by launching clay targets in the air for those shooters to shoot. Can you imagine Legolas doing that?
Matthew McConaughey did an even harder job before gaining recognition in 1993. He worked in a certain chicken coop in Australia. One of his regular tasks is to scoop up chicken poop. He did this while he was studying there as an exchange student.
Do you know that Jerry Seinfield was selling light bulbs over the phone before becoming a fulltime standup and sitcom comedian?
To support himself, one of the highly successful Hollywood stars, Brad Pitt dressed up as a chicken to promote the El Pollo Loco Restaurant in Los Angeles. He wore the suit while he handed out flyers. Among other things that he used to do before he became a star include moving refrigerators and driving limousines. Who would have thought of Brad Pitt as an actual driver and not just a role in a movie?
He is now also one half of one of Hollywood’s hottest couples, he lives with the lovely Angelina Jolie and their six children.
It may be a long running joke for some but Jack Nicholson really did work his way up from the mailroom. It does not hurt that the mailroom was at MGM; however, he also worked as a lifeguard and in a toy store before getting a break in 1969.
As you can see many of the most famous celebrities started out in the humblest positions including clerks, maintenance workers and fast food. Pursuing their dreams was the goal and these jobs were just a way to pay their bills until their dreams came true.
If you have that kind of thinking that the road to fame is pretty easy, you have to really think twice. Many popular artists have undergone struggles before getting their biggest breaks. All you need to do is to be as determined, patient, skillful and hardworking as possible so you’ll have greater chances of making it through.
When acting roles begin coming in, be very choosy. Taking the wrong part in a movie can make or break your career. An early wrong move could devastate your career before it even gets a chance to start. Until you become successful do not be afraid to work even menial jobs, you never know where you might be ‘discovered’.
