Mick Jagger has issued a statement following the death of his partner, the US fashion designer L’Wren Scott yesterday (March 17).

The Rolling Stones frontman said he was “struggling” to understand the news and that he had been “touched” by tributes and messages of support he has received.

Scott was found by her assistant yesterday in her flat in New York in an apparent suicide.

Writing on his Facebook page, a statement from Mick Jagger reads: “I am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way. We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves.”

He added: “She had great presence and her talent was much admired, not least by me. I have been touched by the tributes that people have paid to her, and also the personal messages of support that I have received. I will never forget her, Mick.”

The singer began dating Scott in 2001.

This morning, it was announced that The Rolling Stones have cancelled the first date of their Australian tour after the tragedy. The band were due to play Perth tomorrow night (March 19) but fans have been asked to keep hold of their tickets until further information is available.

Scott was found dead by her assistant 90 minutes after sending her a text message asking her to come to her Manhattan apartment. Police said there was no sign of foul play and no note was found.

Tributes to the designer flooded in from the fashion and entertainment world, with Madonna stating: “This is a horrible and tragic loss. I’m so upset. I loved L’Wren’s work and she was always so generous with me.”
