After meeting at Parsons School of Design in New York, designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka’s label Badgley Mischka has been the go-to for slinky beaded dresses, fishtail gowns, and cocktail numbers that cater to the modern couture customer. Informed by a streamlined 1940s silhouette evoking the halcyon days of Hollywood’s golden age, the brand has been a red carpet staple since 1998, dressing celebrities as iconic as Madonna, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Taylor Swift, Sarah Jessica Parker and Carrie Underwood in their exquisitely beaded gowns in muted colors that both flatter the figure and catch the eye.
In a new tome by Rizzoli to be released in October 2015, the duo’s iconic creations are showcased through 200 photographs by Annie Leibovitz, Patrick McMullan, Ruven Afanador, Ellen von Unwerth, and Walter Chin, among others. With a foreword by André Leon Talley, an essay by Hal Rubenstein, and an introduction by fashion design curator Dennita Sewell, it is an embodiment of the catchphrase that Badgley and Mischka are often known to use – “Glamour always works.”
