Gaga's "Born This Way"
Madonna used the opening gig of the Los Angeles leg of her MDNA world tour to unleash another dig at her famous foe, Lady Gaga.
The 54-year-old Queen of Pop performed her hit song “Express Yourself,” before mashing it up with the chorus of Gaga’s latest hit “Born This Way” during Wednesday night’s near sold-out concert at Staples Center in Downtown L.A.
It’s yet another apparent attempt from Madonna, the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century, to show her fans just how similar the two songs are.
After performing the medley of “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself,” a hit off Madonna’s 1989 album Like a Prayer, the Material Girl sang to the crowd: “She’s not me.”
Then in a recorded video projected on giant screens, Madonna appeared eemingly dressed as the “Poker Face” pop star. The real-life Madonna told the packed stadium — which included stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Mark Salling, Emma Roberts and Sophia Bush — “I’m going to say this one time. I don’t give a sh*t.”
It’s latest reference from the seven-time Grammy Award winner at Gaga, 26. Madonna made a similar slight during a Sept. 15 concert in Atlantic City, N.J., when she said that “imitation is the highest form of flattery.” Previously, she also called “Born This Way” “reductive” in an interview.
Gaga fought back, though didn’t mention Madonna by name when she responded: “I don’t even want to fight back because it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Because that’s really all I care about, is the music.”
Gaga added, “Things are really different than they were 25 years ago, and that’s what makes ‘Born This Way’ so relevant for me. We’re socially in a different place and it’s OK, we don’t have to all slice and hate each other anymore.”
