Heather had returned, more diminished than when she’d left. Andy was attempting to persuade Debbie to vote for A Clockwork Orange at the next Weekday meeting when she glanced up at Heather, who was barely a member of the conversation, and suggested that she join Cinematic Arts.
“It’s not my thing,” Heather said dismissively.
“Because of the movie nerds, right? They make such a big deal out of everything. I felt the same way at first, but it’s much cooler now that they’ve started to leave. It’s fun.”
Reed unlaced her right boot and slipped it off to massage a green-socked foot.
“I like movies,” she announced. “I saw a movie last month.”
“The one with Madonna,” Baldwin confirmed.
“See? We should totally be in film club, but let’s do it after the movie nerds are gone.”
The Madonna film Heather Baldwin references in this scene from Mahogany Slade is 1993′s universally panned Body of Evidence — a courtroom drama and sadomasochistic sex thriller, hence the title’s layered meaning, which possesses more depth than the actual characters in the movie. It was one of many attempts to recapture the success of 1992′s Basic Instinct, and it pained me to see arguably the biggest star in the world at the time essentially playing a designer imposter knock-off of Sharon Stone.
Basic Instinct is set in San Francisco, which is the home of film noir. It’s also a further nod to Vertigo. Body of Evidence is set in Portland, Oregon for no discernible reason. It’s clearly shot there (the Pittock Mansion features prominently) and perhaps the production saved a bundle shooting in the city and chose not to bother hiding the location. Although, it does rain enough there to eventually wash away the movie’s lingering ickiness — though like Lady Macbeth’s hands, it might be a lost cause.
