This was one of the first hit singles which announced the arrival of the latest pop sensation, Madonna. She certainly proved to be no Virgin Mary, but the American songbird soon proceeded to conquer planet pop with a multitude of hit records. I also like ‘Live To Tell’ which demonstrated her versatility as it was completely different to this tune. Nevertheless, I regard ‘Borderline’ as one of the best pop songs in popular music.
you can’t beat that intro. totally classic pop brilliance [S2Cents]
It was such a simpler, happier time (well, except for that whole unpleasant Cold War thing) [krystlerita]
Actually, AIDS had just hit the world in 1981 and no one knew what it was or what to do about what looked like an instant death sentence for millions. I don’t think times were ever simpler. Be well and happy now! Happy new year. [alexuniverse]
At her best [bruceleekick1]
pop masterpiece [ColdOasisU2]
This is back when Madonna was still really good. Before she became a, a, a—oh yeah, a douche bag. [smokiebird06]
This song — espeically the intro — always reminded me of Stephanie Mills’ “Never Knew Love Like This Before”. Recently found out that both songs were written by Reggie Lucas. [IluvEthnicGuys]
BORDERLINE is a precious jewel! Good times! [wuppertalk]
Borderline is the most likeable track of her early career, modern Madonna has given in to the music industry I’m afraid and has lost her soul to the dullards of modern pap. In fact, I only like her stuff up to ’86, then she seems to take a few wrong turns. She’s a talent, though, there’s no denying it [HighgateSamphire]
Whatever you think of her now, she sure could sing her ass off back then. [smokiebird06]
